About enjoying the game

2 weeks ago I made a post asking how could I enjoy the game more, and I realized I just had the wrong approach.

I was too used to games that reward you / give you feedback on every little action you make and walking you by hand in every mission, limiting your actions, giving you main and side goals, etc.

Every time I tried to play NMS I would get bored- I think overwhelmed is a better description, because I had a ton of stuff to do, but everything felt meaningless because I wasn’t getting feedback or progressing towards a bigger something.

And I just realized, that’s the whole point of it.

The game’s not the one supposed to give me feedback or any objective at all, but me.

There’s no “progress” in the game, because I can progress however I want.

There’s no “objectives” in the game, because I can set my own objectives.

Once I realized this, my view of the game completely shifted and I started enjoying it a lot more. I never get overwhelmed or bored or feel like my actions have no meaning.

I am the one who will decide how to play, which planets to go to, how I build my bases and where, what ships and weapons I keep for my collection and which ones I scrap. If I want to spend hours and hours farming nanites, if I go looking for new cosmetics for my character, if I want to find a new pet, if I decide to crash the galactic market of countless of systems and then take advantage of the reduced prices to make even more money, or if I just want to take a walk through space, I can do it and still not feel like I’m not doing anything, because that’s what the game is about.

Don't get distracted claiming a sentinel ship

So I used my last echo locator to find a harmonious camp. It directed me to a ship that looked pretty sweet. Then my visor pointed me to the dissonance resonator.

Last time It led me to an echo locator so I decided to mark the resonator and come back after I searched around for another locator.

Found another resonator (no locator) and decided to call off the hunt and went back to the 1st resonator. Grabbed the resonator and looked for the inverted mirror but my visor was ‘blank’ and the location of the ship was lost. A restore just put me at the 2nd resonator I found & still no ship marker on the HUD

Sure learning a lot of hard lessons lately. I did get a nice multi-tool from the camp tho as a consolation prize

No Man's Sky would benefit from an in-game civilization system

There are a number of player formed civilizations in NMS, but the game itself doesn’t have any kind of system for forming and joining civilizations. Given the current state of multiplayer, with most players having access to the same universe, now would be a good time to implement such a system. Not entirely a new concept, but some features might include:

  • The ability to form a civilization and recruit other players. Civ names can appear next to players’ gamertags/usernames that are members of a civilization.
  • A governance system where players can create ranks that have different privileges.
  • Players could create custom flags for their civs.
  • Claiming starsystems and planets as part of a civilization.
  • co-ownership and management of bases, settlements, and freighters.

Now a system like this would probably go hand in hand with a major settlement overhaul, as part of the same or separate update. Settlements could act as the hearts of civilizations as players work together to grow, maintain, and defend settlements across their civs. A settlement update might include:

  • More freedom over where a settlement is established, what players can build in a settlement, the layout of settlement specific buildings, and the number of settlements a player (or civ) can own.
  • Settlement requirements like food, water, hazard protection, life support, power, and housing.
  • Implementing the existing farming, mining, power, and cooking mechanics in the game.
  • The ability to establish trade routes via frigates between settlements and bases. Trade routes may need to be defended against pirates from time to time.
  • Settlement building that serve specific functions and can be damaged or destroyed during sentinel attacks.
  • Set up defenses against sentinel attacks.

What do you guys think? Is this an update you’d like to see at some point? Are there any other features you’d want implemented in a civilization update?
