NMS HOT POST 2023/08/3

More the 800 hours and I just found a random base computer I could claim on a system I discovered. Just learned those are relics from a pre-NEXT reset age called "wild bases". I got NMS during Endurance. Always something new or old in this case, to learn.

PermaDeath Survival Guide

I have survived over 500 hours in PermaDeath by rigidly adhering to a few standard rules. With the latest expedition many new players are coming to PD, and I think these standards will ease some frustrations.

  1. Bugs. Many avoid PD for this reason alone. But I have never seen any bug that instantly kills. That isn’t what’s happening. Unless a bug pops up that stops you from opening the menu and reloading your last save, a death caused by a bug is partially your fault. Should be an easy choice to lose a little progress vs your whole save. The moment something bugs and you fall through the floor for example, pause, reload last save. Saved.

  2. Don’t end your play session saving in a hazardous environment. Only end your play saving in a 100% safe place. Space Station is best.

  3. NEVER leave your character unattended, no matter how safe your setting is. Even if you’re just going to the bathroom real quick. It is not worth the risk. Reloading your save takes less time than starting from the beginning. Nuff said.

  4. Play with a wired interface if possible. If all you have is wireless, you need to stay on top of your charge. Set a reminder alarm. All it takes is one disconnect while near a predator or monstrosity, and it’s curtains for you.

  5. Do not play while impaired in any way. One slip of judgement is unacceptably risky in space exploration.

  6. Avoid planetary hostile threats at all costs until you have at least 3 S class exosuit shield upgrades, preferably 6.

  7. Avoid extreme terrain environments and heights until you have an least 3 S class movement upgrades, preferably 6, and the jetpack recharge tech.

  8. Avoid pirates until you have at least 3 S class starship shield upgrades and a stack of sodium nitrate or starshield batteries. You can call in a freighter or the anomaly to escape any scans.

  9. Friends don’t let friends use plasma launchers and geology cannons in PermaDeath. This one is unfortunate, but until the self-harm it inflicts is nerfed, they’re far too dangerous. I’d rather spend a bit more time dealing with grouped targets, than risk death.

  10. Whispering eggs have lured many travelers to their end with nought but the promise of a few measley nanites. Not worth it. The only time you should willingly engage the monstrosities is when a mission demands it, and even then DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOFTOP!

  11. Never depart without checking your supplies. Oxygen, Ion Batteries, Sodium/Sodium Nitrate, Tritium, Condensed Carbon, Warp Cells, Launch Fuel, are all things you should never run out of.

  12. If you’re not sure if something is lethal, assume it is. I should do more testing with a dummy profile to determine all lethal threats. I can’t find much info pertaining to what can kill you. I know lightning and meteors can hurt you, but how threatening they are I cant say for sure. That leads to the next rule.

  13. STAY OUT OF EXTREME STORMS! If all you can manage is digging a hole and waiting it out, do it. Don’t attempt enduring them until your exosuit tech is fully upgraded. And don’t attempt it at all in extreme wind events, those twisters are particularly lethal even late game.

  14. Rocket boots are dangerous! They can cause a lot of unintentional forward jetpack boosts. Best to upgrade jetpack tanks and exosuit shields before using them. You’ve been warned.

  15. Be extremely cautious when using glitches. Especially aboard your freighter. Always weigh the rewards of a glitch against your entire save.

  16. Do not engage sentinels without nearby cover. You need a fast escape in case something goes awry. Any building or base with rooms will do.

Those are all the tips that come to mind atm.

In PermaDeath you have to take things more seriously. Every decision could be life and death for your traveler. Immerse yourself and remember every choice can lose you everything. I think the game is most thrilling with those stakes and it really forces an immersive perspective. PermaDeath is the closest experience to what exploring the cosmos would be like for us. So I encourage people to try it. I realize its not for everyone, but once you get used to the risk, things will become a nice blend of relaxing beauty and thrilling danger.

Safe Travels.

NMS Q&A thread! Ask questions, provide answers or just submit a tip. We hope this helps our valu...

This post will be refreshed every few days. The old post are still available for answering questions in those post.

Below are a few popular questions that we’ve received from our past FAQ thread. As always we ask that everyone be respectful and we welcome everyone’s contribution so have fun!

Q- I’m keen to start a new passive money making pursuit. What are some good ideas or guides post-Waypoint?

A#1- Gold farm, then take that stack and sell it at a terminal (not traders) in systems that sell gold. Sell all your gold to the terminal and crash the economy. Then buy it all back at 80% off discount. You just got free money and keep all the gold. All this takes is an initial investment on a gold farm, then you carry all that gold with you and just sell/buy back when you get to another system that sells gold. With 50 stacks in my ship’s cargo hold, I can make somewhere around 150 million units in each system I do this in.

A#2- Start a Farm, Fusion Igniters or Statis Devices Farm which will increase your profits to 100- 200 mil fairly quickly and you can even send out multiple freighter missions which will help you get aronium, magno-gold, Enriched carbon and more which will increase the profits even more.

A#3- Quickest way I’ve found to make a TON of units: Harvesting Storm Crystals. Find a VERY hot planet that has frequent fire storms. DURING STORMS ONLY – you can see the bright white light from Storm Crystals if you fly around low enough. Fly to them, land, quickly harvest them, get back in your ship and fly to the next before you burn up. Q-Where can I post ships and other cool stuff that I want to share with the public? A-You can always post on this sub and now the NMSGlyphExchange is live! Q-How do I get the Advanced Mining Laser? I don’t have the option to craft one, and the multi-tool upgrade vendor at the space station doesn’t have the blueprint for sale.

A- In order to get it, you have to look for the blueprints in crashed ships or abandoned facilities. You get it from the main story (awakenings) or you can buy it on the anomaly.

Q-What do I actually do in the game? I finished the tutorial, is there anything else beside gathering stuff, building a base and repeat?

A#1- It’s really whatever you want, there’s a base story, (assuming you haven’t completed it already), follow the quest log and you’ll figure it out, but things You’d want to do for end game? You can collect multiple multitools, ships, built a fleet for your freighter, etc.

Q- Is there a planet that is populated by many players, and they built their base close to each others like a city?

A- Yeah its the Galactic Hub Project, Its a place where many people have bases and each day the numbers grow. Please help yourself. There are many factions in NMS that do this, even NMS Pirates Hub.

Q- I’m still pretty early into the game, just making my way to the center of the galaxy, what should I be spending my credits on?

A- Go hang around a outlaw/pirate trading post. Cheapest S-class start at around 8-8.5 million without a trade-in. I recommend Vykeen pirate, as then you have two good and 1 remote chances at high-maneuverability S-class: fighter, solar, exotic.

Is there any reason to make a ship with more than 800 ly hyperdrive range?

I spent a little time, built my first S-class explorer, set it up for max. hyperdrive range ending up at 1400 ly with upgrades… but the map doesn’t want to let me warp more than four jumps at a time, and one jump is typically 200 ly.

Have I overdone it? Would it make sense to just re-collect the parts (they’re nothing special, just arclight wings) and get something with the other stats a little higher?

Underground Base Build

Underground Base Build

Piscu-Duca Outpost, Euclid

Been wanting to post this base for eons. It’s my virtual pride and joy. Probably 5 years old so far (I seriously wish there was a way we could see how much time has been invested in a base). I don’t play nearly as often as I used to but random inspiration will strike out of the blue and I’ll lose 3 hours to adding new sections, areas, etc. I can’t imagine ever being finished. Oh! This base predates the new base parts. It was probably half the size when the parts were updated and if you look hard enough, I’m sure you could find a few of the old wooden pieces somewhere. As hard as I worked, I’m sure I missed a swap somewhere.

At my base you’ll find:

  • 8500+ part build
  • No glitch, though a fair amount of overlap
  • Over 60% underground and in preexisting caves
  • Base staff apartments (Scientist, Exocraft tech, and Weapons tech spaces are finished. Overseer’s spot isn’t. The botanist lives on my freighter, though he does have a carbon lab on base)
  • Hidden apartment accesses
  • “Secret” trophy room
  • Above ground Conservatory, access via underground pathing though
  • Underground farming
  • Underground Exocraft garage
  • 2 underground condos
  • Chill planet, though toxic, very green\grey, and otherwise pretty drab. Used to have ancient bones but the reset a few years ago took away that perk.
  • Nearly all wooden construction
  • Solar farm
  • And more…

Do pay me a visit and let me know what you think. I’m sure there’s another 8000 base parts worth of ideas left to be pulled out of this place.
