Why Singularity is NOT on a Fake Timer

Why Singularity is NOT on a Fake Timer

Background

For many years Hello Games have run community rewards. The most prominent being the Quicksilver rewards. They work by linking your efforts towards the community goal to their server. This makes the missions available, monitors our completion of any missions and adds to a global counter.

As a pacing mechanism, the speed at which things progress is set by HG manually, to make more desirable items slower or make single items in a set faster. They either do this by setting the number of required contributions or by using a contribution modifier. (I am not sure which but they would be functionally the same.)

They sometimes adjust the contribution during the progress. Usually when they have other plans, like a specific update that includes themed items. The most notorious time was during the first expedition that used a community reward, which had to have a cut-off to approximately meet a specific deadline when an interview would be published. Unfortunately this may have led to the perception we have today, where some assume this is always the case.

They will also change the overall count occasionally. If the servers get overloaded and no contributions are registered for a period then they extrapolate the progress and adjust things. If they have an update ready to roll on a specific date and the current item hasn’t quite reached the goal they will either increase the multiplier or just set it to done. They occasionally do this when they just want to speed the progress of individual parts of grouped items. This may be timer related but it has never been egregious. Just the last few percentage points to better pace when the new rewards arrive. We have also seen them just give up when things are badly bugged, and make the item available as part of a patch.

Leviathan

The second expedition to use a community counter was Leviathan, and it serves as a clear example of how it works and what happens when things go awry.

Leviathan had a four part goal. We started the expedition with C-Class modules and each goal increased these, B through S then X.

HG capped individual contributions without making that information public, this gets into data mining territory which is not really appropriate in this sub but it stands to reason HG would take action against manipulation by players to break their counters. At the time some players complained that it was obviously fake but we know exactly what happened because it was tracked and recorded.

Things began OK but something went wrong with the B-Class counter. It even began to drop. HG fixed this and just gave us the Bs and set the A counter going.

That counter went without a hitch quickly reaching the goal. As did S. This probably surprised HG because a great many users were saying they didn’t want to do that expedition. And yet it was very successful and the counters went fast.

HG clearly decided that they needed to pace out the X-Class reward they seemed to set it far too slow. We can see some evidence of a form of intervention, but notably not based on a timer artificially increasing the numbers. It was either manual or algorithmic.

In summary, first it was bugged, then it was OK for two stages, then it was obviously manipulated for the last stage.

Singularity

HG had a specific date in mind for Singularity. It was timed to coincide with the Apple developer’s conference. They needed to switch their community server over to the expedition but the QS cloak wasn’t quite finished naturally. So they appeared to increase the multiplier dramatically or reduce the number of contributions required, giving it a huge boost on the last day.

They were then free to set the counter for the expedition. If the count was fake they wouldn’t have bothered. They could just have left the cloak to finish naturally and put the next quicksilver item up. Leaving the expedition pretending to act like a second counter. This is perhaps the most compelling reason to not believe the rumours about a counter. Fake counters don’t need this much effort and wouldn’t need manipulating.

Now, perhaps predictably, given the slower pace of updates this year, the Singularity expedition has proved popular, but unfortunately it has also confused a lot of players who didn’t grasp how it worked. The upshot of this is some thought it was bugged and wondered why they couldn’t finish the expedition and some wanted to test the system and hand in several hundred seeds (even thousands) by duplication and presumably a macro.

As we learned in Leviathan, that experiment was doomed. HG know some players will try this. A thousand contributions wouldn’t move the counter significantly enough to be visible because they know it isn’t feasible and have stopped that happening. I will include the graphs from that time. It is technically a form of data mining but it is not spoiling anything so I hope it is seen as appropriate.

Leviathan Misson Progress

Conclusion

Overall this isn’t fakery, this is pragmatism and a sense of fairness. And, in the unlikely event that progress slows down enough that we look like failing the last goal, HG may aid the speed of progress. Yes, that is manipulation, but that isn’t the same as a fake timer.

Now, I can already tell by the cry of cheating by many on social media, that the received wisdom that there is a timer will probably stick for a while. It has stuck before. Any “evidence” that supports this received wisdom will be probably believed by those predisposed to. If the counter needs adjusting or we have more bugs, then it will only add to this perception.

Eventually, when the community that monitors the counters switch their systems to allow monitoring of this expedition, we will hopefully be able to see real time progress information. Then we will be able to judge what really happened. But that data is best left to the areas of the internet where it is appropriate to discuss data mining in more detail.

Suffice to say, if you are worried or concerned that HG are only pretending there is a community counter for the goals the actual evidence doesn’t support this. They have haver used timers to directly manipulate the numbers in that way, or to pretend our efforts are meaningful when they are not. They have sometime changed things for good reason but never in a way that seeks to pull the wool over our eyes. The counters are real and we are watching closely.

I enjoy NMS, but the glitches and crashes make it very hard...

Don’t get me wrong things have been fixed and stability has improved in one place and crashed in another. If you are also seeing the game crash you are not alone.

Last time I tried to play a Expedition the glitches and crashes forced me to abandon it. The ships glitched all over so fast they could not be tracked with eyes or targeting scanners. Too many locks ups, too many glitches and bugs.

I used to see an issue where from the moment the game started I would have 48hrs to play. The more intense the activity or graphics the shorter the play time got. If I had a fight with sentinels I might have 15-20 min play time. Then Crash.

I fully rebuilt my PS4. Installed new fan, power supply, thermal pads and thermal grease. New Samsung SSD. I know the SSD wasn’t the fix because I still got crashes, but the issue seemed to go away when I installed the power supply. So I wasn’t sure if that was power stability issue or a code issue. But always got those codes that blamed the crash in a 3rd party HDD. -which honestly smacks of cheat programing that directly coded to register locations in the HDD cache chip.

So for a time the game has been stable. Have been able to leave it run for a week and no issues. Though I haven been fairly inactive since the rebuild.

Expedition: Singularity

I rarely have issues in space or space stations, or even classic worlds.

But Expedition destination worlds, with Dissonance and gravity storms… I have had the ship (code) crash, wont land, acts like it’s in space, spins 360, read outs become glitched and read weird. Game freezes or drops to error screen.

Initially the game just locked up. Might get 5-10 min on a Dissonance world, per login. Until I left the planet. But they fixed something so now it doesn’t lockup, it does go to a blue screen. Just landing at the destination and then locating the camp on foot is a nightmare then and now. Too many crashes. But annoyingly the game requires you to fight sentinels to collect materials, and this is guaranteed to decrease playable time. This compounded by the fact that you must hunt Quads that can go invisible, jump around inside the ground and prefer to spend all their time behind the player, or inside a rock where they are invincible, jumping out just long enough to break a shield. So of not game crash then game over. Thank goodness they added the quick saves.

Just had the game lockup 2 min into a login, on a space station. Crashed last night while trying to find a place to buy glass. It’s not yet part of my skills to make it. So I have to buy a few chunks. Game crashed after several warps. It did pretty good all things considered. Logged in this morning, took about two min to launch and load the game. Started at the Warp Gate on the space station. Checked the trade terminal. Warped to another station. I kid you not, maybe 2 min of game play, and it crashed in transit.

Unstable is the only way to describe the game play:

Other games do crash randomly. But, of all my games, all 140 some I have collected, only NMS crashes like this. I must have over 200 reports logged with Sony for this game alone, and at least 3 directly with Hello Games for persistent crashing, including singularity.

ohh and because I know it will be mentioned:

no rebuilding the database on PS4 will not resolve any of this. Please do that until every time you reboot and the game will still crash.

The Storm has Subsided!

Edit: trying to warp to Zahmanum XV Prime causes crash to blue screen. <– definite bug (WARP)

Edit: Disabling all multiplayer stuff fixes most of the crashing in Dissonant worlds and I have no idea why other than something in memory is being over loaded. Other players edits still show up, just not the players. <– definite bug (Dissonance/Gravity Storm & Multiplayer defaults)

Since identifying these two bugs I am almost finish with the Expedition finally. There have been crashes, but far and few compared to every 2-10 min.

As the years go by, it has become even more clear to me just how amazing it is that Hello Games mana...

After the games controversial Launch back in 2016 I do think that a lot of gamers at the time just assumed that the reason No Man’s Sky struggled so much at first was because hello games were such a small team that could not possibly deliver on all their many promises. There was also a widespread belief that once the bigger video game studios started making thier own space games it whould show just how out of their depth that hello games really was by taking on such an ambitious project in the first place.

Now after 7 years we can look back and realize that frankly it’s kind of a miracle that No Man’s Sky. even exist at all because other games that have attempted to do what No Man’s Sky did have not worked out so well

For example, Mass effect Andromeda was originally going to be very much like No Man’s Sky and yet the developers struggled so much with it that they decided to just abandon the idea in the middle of making the game.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks like it also tried to pull off no man sky on smaller scale but even they are having a tough time with the idea and it looks like the game ain’t never coming out

Star citizen is more successful compared to the others, but just like Beyond Good and Evil 2 that game still does not even have a release date and Even when it comes to a big triple A game like like Starfiled Todd Howard himself admitted just how difficult it would be to pull off the seamless planet landings that we see in a game like no man sky and that was a big reason why he ultimately decided not to include it in thier game

The reason I bring all this is up is simply to say that what the incredible team at hello games did was not easy at all and even game studios with much bigger teams and bigger budgets have a hard time because it is still insanely hard to make a space exploration game

Runaway Mould Theft!

Stupid question: If I stumble across someone’s base and take their runaway mould, if they were to show up 5 minutes later, can they still harvest what should be there, or have I forced them to wait for it to respawn?

I ask because while checking out someone’s base I saw that they had a healthy collection of mould balls, but I don’t want to take what’s theirs if that means they get screwed.

Thanks.
