NMS HOT POST 2023/10/18

Rehab Support Thread for Traveler’s who invested so many hours into an expedition only to miss the deadline by a thread due to real life commitments.

Sometimes reality snaps you back into it in the most inopportune times. I've had my fair share of uncompleted expeditions but only because they were permadeath and I hadn't learned how to be careful. But with this Voyagers Expedition, a work commitment that got toxic in the last two days caused me to be unable to complete the expedition in the crucial hours that I could have used, even though I was way over 60% done. It kind of sucks but I'm glad I still got the lightning jetpack trail along the way. I just feel sorry for the combined 31 hours I spent on the expedition that I could have spent finishing other games if I only knew I wouldn't be able to finish it. I say combined because a certain glitch involving the next Rendezvous point not appearing in the galaxy map forced me to restart the expedition just to continue it. I spent about 13 hours in the first try and 18 hours in the second attempt.
Do you have any missed opportunity woes with your expeditions?

What were players doing before the NEXT update?!

I’m a new gamer (1 month now) and absolutely love it. Hands down one of the best games ever, imo. With the new Omega update, I decided to go read the last updates’ patch notes, and to my surprise I discover that practically 90% of the game I know today was actually only added in 2018 with the NEXT update! Even basic stuff like having a teleporter anywhere on a planet, doing space station missions and even ringed planets didn’t exist before.

My question is, to Day-1 players, what were you guys even doing for 2 whole years?! Did you just land on planets, scan and that was it? I mean, I guess I understand the whole backlash thing now if that’s what you guys could only do.

Unpopular opinion: Griefing groups shine a spotlight on an aspect of No Mans Sky that has gone under...

This is an unpopular opinion by me. It’s OK if you don’t agree. Please be civil in the comments. Also I’m on mobile so apologies for any strange formatting.

TLDR: We should not actively ignore griefers, we should instead think and talk about why and how bases are getting griefed, and how Hello Games could implement systems to better prevent it in the future.

The problem: Popular and iconic bases within player groups are getting griefed because of an exploit. Defending your base is next to impossible due to the way PVP and base building is currently implemented.

Possible solutions:

“Captian Obvious: Bug Fixes!”: Make it known to Hello Games that the base griefing exploit is a real and tangible issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Build permissions should be set to OWNER ONLY by default to help noob players.

“Sorry, we’re closed!”: Allow Base Owners to “Lockdown” their base, preventing any players from entering “locked” doors. Exiting should still be possible to avoid players getting locked in cages, another form of griefing. One way doors? “Emergency escape” hatch?

“Sorry, no multi-tool building allowed inside!”: For larger or “tourism” based builds, allow base owners to place “zones” where your Multi Tool Build Menu is inaccessible (Pressing up on the D-pad doesn’t open anything), like in Space Stations or the Anomaly, and building anything is impossible. Basically like a spectator mode but you can still mine rocks if you need resources. This one does not prevent the Terrain Manipulator grief, maybe disable the terrain manipulator while in range too? I dunno!

“PVP overhaul or update”: Personally, I don’t want fully realized PvP in NMS. It leads to toxic behavior and bullying in sandbox games like this. (Think ARK survival evolved alpha clans for example). Instead have PVP damage disabled by default, and allow players to enable it if they want to duke it out for fun with their friends.

Do you have any ideas? Please share them below. Remember this is a discussion thread, please keep it civil. Thank you for reading!

It's just me who thinks travel between Galaxies is overly punitive and tiresome

Just clarifying, I know the drill. Go to a Portal, and travel to the closest planet to the core. Swap to a ship and multi-tool used only “to break” by the jumping. Remove all the exosuit upgrades then head to the core and jump. Wait for all the jump animation to finish. When you arrive, build a base in the new galaxy, fix the ship to allow it to fly, find another portal, activate the glyphs, and repeat the process.

If you want to have access to all galaxies without depending on anyone you will need to do it at least 255 times! And even though the steps above reduce the cost of the trip, you still need to spend fixing the ship, activating portals, warp cells and building a base. Also unless you do all 255 galaxies in one run, which can take hours, you will need to remove and return your upgrades every time you stop and restart this process. I have more than 40 upgrades in my exosuit tech storage. Because they are already optimised to use the supercharged slots, I need to move these upgrades in a way to keep them in the same slot when I return them, which is very time-consuming in not a good way.

Another issue is that in the end, you will have your base list so cluttered with bases to access galaxies in your terminal, that will make it a nightmare to find the base you need, given the teleporter has no sorting or search options.

It doesn’t make sense to me. I mean it is a game in which the main focus is “exploration“, what is the point of making it so hard and annoying to explore other galaxies?

What I am asking is simple, the possibility to travel to any galaxy without someone’s help or the need to catalogue all galaxies.

There are many ways that it could be done. Here is one example that could be made without changing the current mechanic too much:

In this idea Atlas Station is connected to one and only one of the 255 Galaxies. So we need at least 256 Atlas Stations in each Galaxy. The community will have the role of identifying which A.S. is linked to each galaxy. My point to suggest using the Atlas Stations is because they are a cool feature that, after the “Atlas Path” mission, become kind of useless, a glorified Iteration Helios, also I think it makes some sense in the game’s lore.

My suggestion:

  • The player travels to the Atlas Station linked to the galaxy he/she wants to go.
  • In exchange for something (maybe a Heart of the Sun, to give some use to these bunch of blueprints we get during Atlas Path), you get a token for the Galaxy you are going from the Atlas Station.
  • You keep that token in the exosuit or ship inventory.
  • Then the process is the same as the current mechanic. You head to the core and jump, things still break, but instead, it takes you to the next galaxy, it will take you to the token’s galaxy.
  • After the jump token is consumed and removed from your inventory.
  • If you are not carrying any token, it will take you to the next galaxy as it is currently.
  • If you are carrying more than one token, the priority will be the one in the top leftmost slot of the Exosuit.

Pros:

  • Give the player the freedom to fly to any galaxy, any time.
  • Don’t change the current mechanic, just add a new feature.
  • Avoid unnecessary bases cluttering in the teleporter.
  • It is way cheaper than the current mechanic, once you don’t have to jump to each galaxy to get the one you want.

Cons:

  • It is less but still annoying, moving upgrades, fixing things, etc.
  • If you want to visit all the galaxies, that solution doesn’t help.

There are other solutions that could make things even easier, like using the Atlas Stations as a portal in itself, nothing breaks, etc. But I think it’s good not to make things too easy either, just not as punishing as today.

I hope HG address that one day.

Probably the weakest sentinel ship I found yet. At 99 he’s has little to no damage output. My first sentinel ship had 254 as it’s damage output. He looks like a cross between a Manta Ray and Spider and sometimes he looks like he’s conflicted with thought.

But really? How could I put the cutest little frustrated ship into a battle?
