Random Interaction Encounter: Getting Hailed by NPC pilots for Trade during Space Flight

I am now getting Gek Trader Pilot Interactions during space flight (anyone else experienced something similar?)

So I think since my reputation with geks is slowly growing, I'm now being randomly hailed by gek pilots randomly when I'm going hyperspeed from point A to B (station to planet, planet to station etc).

Why geks I say, beacuse that's the only pilot's that hailed me in space and Interacted with me as of yet.

Freighter help for a newbie?

So I am very new to the game and still figuring things out. I’ve played for about 5 days.

I was doing some exploring and suddenly found myself in a dogfight in space defending a freighter. Cool! I fight off a wave of pirate vessels and survive. Then I am welcomed aboard the freighter, neat! Maybe they’ll reward me! I go aboard the freighter and suddenly they GIFT ME THE FREIGHTER?

Now apparently I’m a freighter captain? With a frigate as well? I have NFI what I’m doing. I’m in over my head! Is this ship my new base? How do I fly it? And do I need to bring the frigate with me somehow?

Can anyone provide me some tips on what I should do? Or some resources I can read up on? Thank you!

Ok guys weird question

I got my father to try NMS with me, but the thing is he’s a very picky player, and he’s new to open world survival style games. I’m just wondering if anyone has advice on how to present the ”quirks” of this game to him (bugs, glitches and necessary reloads) ? I know he’d like the space exploration aspect of the game but things like weird creature generation, Sentinels hunting you forever, extra oxygen bar you can’t refuel as soon as you start the game (you have to reload the game to maybe get rid of it, it’ll kill you if you don’t…) are things that could easily make him go ”Nah F this game” if I can’t prep him to it… Any advice ?

I might be too dumb for space

I needed cadmium for my first hyperdrive upgrade. I looked online and saw that cadmium was found on planets that orbit red stars. I opened the galaxy map and swapped filters to get a nice black background instead of the hazy red nebula that I was in to help me spot red stars. Every time I flew to a red star, it wouldn’t be red. Time after time after time I would warp and sigh because it wasn’t what I was looking for. For 4 hours over 2 days I searched for a red star. I found every color imaginable and saw some very cool planets, but no cadmium. I thought that maybe the systems were color coded in a different way so I googled how to find red stars in No Man’s Sky. There were no helpful results. Because nobody else had been so stupid.

After 5 hours searching I realized that I had been flipping the filter to “lifeform” to get rid of the red haze which changed the colors of the stars. According to the Steam achievement I ended up warping to more systems than 84% of players ever had. When I left the filter off I found cadmium on my first try.

I don’t even know how to feel. I’m glad I got cadmium but I am reconsidering if I’m cut out for space exploration.

A Portal on Every Planet? Math doesn't check out...

I read somewhere that every planet has a portal on it. According to the advertising and the in-game dialog, there are over 18 quintillion planets in NMS total.

If the portal has 16 glyphs to choose from, and there are 12 glyphs in a portal address, that should be 16^12, which is over 281 trillion different portal addresses. So I read somewhere else there are 256 galaxies, and the portals are only intra-galaxy (cannot portal you to a different galaxy than the source), so if we multiply 281 trillion by 256, we get roughly 72 quadrillion portal addresses spread over the 256 galaxies. That’s 3 orders of magnitude shy of 18 quintillion.

Is some of this information incorrect, or am I missing something else? Or could it be that not every planet has a portal? I would think some of the barren ones might not, since they seem to have no other buildings, but I don’t usually spend much time on them.

I would think it’s not realistically possible for anyone to scour an entire planet manually searching for a portal, so it would be extremely difficult to visually prove that no portal exists on any given planet, but unless some of those numbers are wrong, I would think it has to be that some planets don’t contain portals.

Just feeling extra math-nerdy tonight, and was curious if anyone had any information about the claim that every planet had a portal.

wtf is up with the Cronus interface?

Trying to give dude a cupcake. I keep components like plating and tubes in my suit for various things, and I keep creature pellets as well. In my freighter, I have a bunch of surplus eggs that I have no space for in storage.

The extremely limited interface for presenting Cronus with a food item limits you to 3 options. It is counting the carbon nanotubes, the creature pellets and for some insane reason the eggs that are in my freighter and that means there’s no room for it to give me the cupcake as an option to offer him. I’m assuming it’s going alphabetically… But it’s literally letting me offer him nanotubes before it lets me offer him an actual food item. Why is it not just a menu, like the trade rocket, where you can pick what to hand him, or (like people have been asking for) just shove a bunch of food in him at once for nanites? I didn’t realize it was THIS shitty.
