NMS HOT POST 2024/03/25

💫 Reasons this could be a big update

Perhaps inevitably, some of us are trying to downplay the surprise emoji but I am actually thinking the opposite. Here is my reasoning:

Originally the idea for the Void Mother content seemed to be four parts over one year. We mostly expected the ending to be a big update and result in the main content update of 2023.

This would have presumably included the new Space Stations and we would expect some significant impact of the Void Mother story. Maybe a faction system (hinted in a couple of titles) or a dramatic shift in how the anomaly characters interact with us.

Then, as we approached the end of 2023, a few prominent streamers were contacted by a marketing company on behalf of HG to make some form of review video or a 'why I play NMS' video. This was supposedly going to coincide with an expedition and twitch drops.

This activity suddenly stopped and we got the Light No Fire announcement. HG didn't ever put out the expected fourth expedition and they adjusted the redux season accordingly.

Then we got what was probably the planned twitch drop alongside a free play period. This certainly seemed like the delayed end of year content but the expedition itself was more like an introduction to the game and not the expected 'part four'.

So, my theory is that the end of 2023 was originally going to be bigger than Omega but they shifted lanes for the LNF announcement. They then decided to separate out the new Expedition System because this was bound to have unforeseen issues. They even dropped it in Experimental for community testing. Something they haven't done since Starbirth needed testing.

So we are still awaiting the end of the Void Mother story and at least I expect this to have big ramifications for the game. It is presumably something they have been working on for well over a year and I would expect it to be content heavy. My expectations are that we will see a shift in the Dissonant Systems, and that the way they are currently was just temporary.

We have an early Easter and what better time to drop new playable content?

Thoughts on possible sales:

We also tend to see sales for smaller updates but not always for larger content updates. And we have no evidence of sales before Easter yet. There is a "Dinos Vs. Robots Fest" scheduled for 26th on Steam and at a pinch HG could include themselves in that. But do they have time to slot in a cross platform sale considering the game was briefly on sale the other day? Probably not.

Mischief on freighter module runs..

There is a famous solar system in Euclid (11FFEAF8879) in which any derelict freighter run will produce S class freighter upgrades.
The system is therefore FULL of bases and at any one time there are probably 5 or 6 people in the system.

Most people will come into the system, buy a scanner from the scrap dealer (at quite a high cost) and then go and run the freighter themselves.
You know the feeling, you’re alone on a dark empty freighter in the freezing cold, opening boxes and fighting random aliens and faulty security drones. In a little world of your own.

I had an idea. I’d sit near a planet looking at the space station. When I see a person come out of the station I wait for the ‘this user has found something in deep space’ message, then I’d warp to their location.. Wait for them to go in and then join them.
There they are opening boxes.. I run past them and go straight to engineering, get the module, teleport out and leave.

When I did this the first time.. I actually went and stood in front of the guy and jumped up and down expecting them to at least try and shoot me. They were clearly surprised to see me, but they didn’t shoot me so I went and got the module from engineering and left.
At the time I didn’t know if this would prevent them from getting the module (it doesn’t). But I didn’t care it was a bit of fun.

I do this all the time now. I don’t bother buying a scanner.. I just warp to every spot in deep space that shows an active player, and run and get the module.
Not a single once (I’ve done it over 20 times) has a player ever shot at me. Though most times I just run right by them, some never even notice me.

Everyone should do it.. it’s hilarious 🙂
And it’s harmless, the player who bought the scanner still gets everything they went for. Plus they get the heart racing moment of being confronted out of the blue by another real human 🙂

Journey to the Center of the Galaxy - Conclusion

Day 1 – Unknown distance from the center of the galaxy

Awoke on a toxic planet.

Ship’s crashed, but I don’t remember how. I don’t remember much of anything before that last jump. Everything’s gone.

Well, not everything…

Previous Log Entries:

(I thought for sure I’d get bored and abandon this. But I got into it. The early part was especially fun strategizing how I’d maximize the hyperdrive with limited tech slots. That first freighter battle nearly did me in since I pulled all the shield and weapon upgrades for more hyperdrive upgrades.

Eventually, I started to feel some my my character’s obsession. I’d take a break to eat, intending to pick it up again the next day. But I’d feel the pull to log back in and start jumping again. I actually finished the journey a couple days ago. I’ve just been waiting a bit between posts.

I got really lucky on the ship. Fairly early on, I found an S class explorer at a space station. It had a large number of tech slots already unlocked. It had three super-charged slots in a row together and the fourth was two rows beneath. I was able to load up on S and X class hyperdrive upgrades fairly quick and got it up to 2500 light years and +350% efficiency. I wish I’d saved the system glyphs as it made the journey so much faster.

Some “interesting” stats about the journey:

  • Total jumps: 341
  • Total systems discovered: 339 (only the last two were not “First Contact”)
  • Total warp cells used: 105
  • On-Foot Exploration: 14,014 – This surprised me, I thought it would be lower. I reckon most of this was running around space stations.
  • Total freighter battles: 2 – And not one dreadnought battle. Another surprise. With all those jumps, I expected there to be more. I guess my play time on this save was too low for more. Most of the downed pirates were from a couple missions I did for flavor/variety and getting attacked flying to space stations.

Thank you to those that offered advice on how to make the journey faster. That wasn’t my goal with this journey, but this community has always been great about sharing tips and game info for new players (which I’m not, but I appreciate ya’ll anyway).

Anyway, I hope at least some of you enjoyed this. Thanks for riding along.)

Reactor Mods on Derelicts

Reactor Mods on Derelicts

The first time I ran this Derelict Freighter it gave me a C Class Reactor for a starship.

Yes, apparently, Derelicts now do this.

Given the fixed nature of the tech on Derelicts, you’d expect this to correlate the also, right?

No, on this run I discovered the Derelict was in actual fact a B Class.

Derelicts can give Reactors of any Class, don’t get fooled by this please 🙏😊
