I just started to play and wow!

I bought No Man Sky when it first launches. I wasn’t a fan of it so I uninstalled until last night. I recently ran out of good games to play so I was browsing my library and saw no man and remembered the Cinderella comeback I read about.

I installed the game at 4 pm yesterday and started to play. I was blown away at how much smother the game seems to unfold and how well the main story teaches you about all the systems in the game. I was having so much fun building a base and upgrading my star ship.

After getting to a new part of the story looking for Artemis I looked at the time and it was God damn 2 am!!! I had to go to sleep and wake up at 6 am for work!

It’s been a long time since a game hypnotized me like this in a long time. Hopefully my journey will continue to be this entertaining! See you all in space! Named Toadz on PC if anyone runs into me.

Feel like I'm treading water...

I’ve got about 70 hours in the game and feel like I’m in a rut, grinding for A/B class ships and upgrades, doing the same things over and over… running back and forth between trade posts, space station, base. It’s getting repetitive and I’m kinda not having as much fun as I did to start.

I see players on Reddit with upgraded S class ships, freighters, etc having only put 100-150 hours in the game

I know there really is no wrong way to play the game but obviously I’m not doing it right, either

Any advice to get beyond this plateau I’ve reached?

A Portal on Every Planet? Math doesn't check out...

I read somewhere that every planet has a portal on it. According to the advertising and the in-game dialog, there are over 18 quintillion planets in NMS total.

If the portal has 16 glyphs to choose from, and there are 12 glyphs in a portal address, that should be 16^12, which is over 281 trillion different portal addresses. So I read somewhere else there are 256 galaxies, and the portals are only intra-galaxy (cannot portal you to a different galaxy than the source), so if we multiply 281 trillion by 256, we get roughly 72 quadrillion portal addresses spread over the 256 galaxies. That’s 3 orders of magnitude shy of 18 quintillion.

Is some of this information incorrect, or am I missing something else? Or could it be that not every planet has a portal? I would think some of the barren ones might not, since they seem to have no other buildings, but I don’t usually spend much time on them.

I would think it’s not realistically possible for anyone to scour an entire planet manually searching for a portal, so it would be extremely difficult to visually prove that no portal exists on any given planet, but unless some of those numbers are wrong, I would think it has to be that some planets don’t contain portals.

Just feeling extra math-nerdy tonight, and was curious if anyone had any information about the claim that every planet had a portal.
