NMS HOT POST

No Man's Sky planet size calculation

I’ve always wondered how big the planets in No Man’s Sky are. I already knew they were going to be small, but it turned out that they are tiny.

I placed two save beacons at a distance of 418u from each other, collected the coordinates using the analysis display, obtaining the coordinates A = -32.81 / +54.24 and B = -32.50 / +53.99.

Using the haversine formula and assuming that u = meter, I found that the distance between the two points on the test planet should be 41.67 km (25.89 mi) instead of 418 m (0.26 mi) if the planet had the diameter of the Earth.

The question soon arose of what the size of the planet should be for the result to be 418 m and it turns out that the planet should have a radius of 64 km (39.77 mi) or 2⁶ km (it may have been a coincidence, but I think it is likely that the radius of the planets is 2⁶ km due to how the calculations have to be done within the game). The surface area is 804 km² (310.43 mi²).

For comparative purposes, the test planet would be the size of Weywot, which is a natural satellite of a trans-Neptunian dwarf planet in the solar system. Almost the distance from Boston (Massachusetts) to Providence (Rhode Island), i.e. absolutely minuscule.

Calculation details in the comments.

(there may be grammar mistakes)

Edit: If the average surface area of the planets in the game is 804 km² as originally calculated, then the total explorable surface area in the game is equivalent to 29 trillion Earth planets (29,075,048,491,006.6), which would be 72 times the amount of stars present in the Milky Way.

This game's community is surprisingly very wholesome (from a new player)

I usually play more single player games so when I saw starfield is coming out in 3 months I got in a space game mood and decided to try out no man’s sky and the reason I said surprisingly wholesome is because usually the people who play survival games aren’t the friendliest bunch you know what I mean games like dayz or rust you try to meet up with people and they either kill you and shout slurs or grief you or back stab you along the way so anyway while doing the tutorial quests I got into the anomaly for the first time and checked out the place for a bit and this random dude invited me into his group I joined them I told them I was new and they immediately helped me out we did a bunch of stuff together one of them gave me a bunch of shit to sell which I used to buy a new ship and he even showed me how to build a base and even when I asked how to get more blueprints they helped and showed me how to find those buried tech for the salvaged data but anyways my point is props to the NMS community for being so helpful to new players can’t wait to grind further 🔥🔥🔥

Why are NMS players so "defensive"(don't know a better word to discribe it) about Starfiel...

Everytime I see a Starfield video there’s atleast one comment saying No man’s sky was here before Starfield and things like this. It’s not like HG will stop updating NMS or something like this.

The games aren’t even that similar, the thing they have most in common is that they are space games. Just let people get hyped for a more story driven game with a more realistic art stile, you don’t have to go to a crusade to try and bring everyone into NMS instead of Starfield

I wanted to know your thoughts about this

NMSTG Subreddit will be Shutting down for 2 Days!

Hey Everyone,

Thank you all for voting and it seems that you have changed our minds.

The Subreddit No Man’s Sky The Game will be shutting down tonight at Midnight for a 48 hour Blackout to Protest the API changes that reddit is implementing. The Subreddit will be back and running on Tuesday Midnight.

Context: Here is what Reddit Announced and here is a great breakdown that Apollo did!

The AMA by Ceo, u/spez, was utter garbage and was an even more concern for the Services and the users. Its seems that Reddit is Hell bent on its ways to ruin this platform for the 3rd Party Service providers that provide services to a lot of people, some services even for the impaired and disabled. And not only that but the fact that they want to capitalize on all of this by charge prices to Free services on their platform is utterly shameful.

Thank you all for showing your support. Lets all stand together and show reddit how much we all care about our 3rd Party Service Providers.

See you all Soon!
