NMS HOT POST

Starfield is an excellent opportunity for this community to show grace and class

Since yesterday, I’ve seen some No Man’s Sky fans mocking Starfield (sometimes seriously, sometimes not). Calling it copied homework, saying “I bet it can’t do [insert feature] better than NMS can,” saying it’ll be broken and disappointing like other Bethesda games, etc.

Regardless of what you think about Starfield, crapping on the game is not a good look for the No Man’s Sky community. The similarities between the two games are obvious, so lots of people will be looking to No Man’s Sky fans to see what they say. I’ve frequently heard that this is one of the friendliest and most helpful gaming communities on Reddit, and I would personally agree. Becoming snarky about another high profile space exploration game could taint that reputation pretty fast.

Just want to encourage everyone here to be friendly and supportive of Starfield. I would be willing to bet that’s what Sean Murray would like to see from us as well. He’s suffered his own share of internet jeering, and likely wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

And honestly, my hunch is that the two games will be different enough that they’ll survive alongside one another just fine. Here’s to many more hours of fun in both games for years to come!

Is it time for another "Terrain Generation" update?

Hello Games and No Man’s Sky have been exceptional at providing so many lovely content updates since launch. And they’ve updated so many visual components as well…but mainly relegated to improving and adding to assets that already exist in the game. Flora, Fauna, Lasers, VFX, space whales etc. etc.

But relatively few of the “beauty” updates with the notable exceptions of NEXT and (edit) ORIGINS. have touched on improving terrain creation.

I can’t help but think that these kind of fundamental updates are being avoided, as to not hurt the base building components of the game.

Do you feel this has become a log jam that is preventing NMS from evolving more complex and dynamic terrain features?

Would you be willing to lose your bases for them to update these features?

Is there a solution that could be implemented to let them keep growing fundamental changes without blowing away all the bases?

Let me know what you think.

Just finished Expedition 7

It was a rollercoaster. I rage quit a few times after dying, some due to my own incompetency, some due to glitches. I finally found a way to easily backup my saves, but after that I only died once after being ambushed by a bunch of pirates in space.

Other than the frustration of permadeath it was really a lot of fun. The real joy to me in this game is improving things: your character, your ship, your mechs, your base, etc. When you have all of that stuff close to maxed out the game becomes boring. Prior to the expedition I would log in, collect my spoils from my frigates, fight sentinels for a bit to get Walker Brains, maybe farm some mats and then log out because there is nothing else I really wanted to do. It had become rote.

The expedition brought back the olden days when I had nothing and didn’t really know what I was doing. I look forward to the next one.

Regarding the surge of griefers in Permadeath Anomaly

There’s recently been a surge of griefers getting their mech in the anomaly and killing people.

What makes it possible is the loading zone box at the very back corridor of Anomaly leading to the blueprint shops. It’s incorrectly scaled and doesn’t touch the ceiling, allowing people to jetpack over it and fly out of anomaly with their jetpack. This leaves the anomaly interior loaded in space. (Been like that since 2019 but only recently discovered by griefers)

They will then fly to their nearby parked freighter, place down minotaur geobay with base building limits disabled and fly it back to the still loaded Anomaly to cause havock.

This issue is fairly easily fixable by scaling up the loading zone trigger box so that people can’t clip out of anomaly.
