NMS HOT POST 2022/09/24

Unpopular opinion: Not all upgrades to NMS have been improvements.

So, I’m aware this could well be either decisive, or just plain get me abuse, but there is one particular aspect of the game these days which really bugs me.

I used to really enjoy chilling out, traversing the galaxy, trading, building my settlement and enjoying the ride. These days, that doesn’t seem to work. With every update, I seem to get attacked more. Sentinels attacking my settlement, more aggressive pirates attacking my ship. Has anyone else found this? It bugs me that I have to spend so much time fighting – I’m a lover!

So I learned 3 new things just now!

Still trying to remain unspoiled and just, y’know… Be curious.

So I learned 3 new things just now while I was flying around my freighter and my new frigate buddies. First new thing I learned was you can land on the frigates! How cool is that?! I wandered around a bit and my HUD said “frigate repair.” So I’m guessing, there’s an event that means I need to come repair one of my frigate buddies at some point. There were numerous panels that kinda looked like it would. Alternatively, maybe if I get my frigate buddies into a fight and we win, I’ll have to come fix them up afterwards? I dunno.

Second new thing, was that gravity from a planet we’re “orbiting” will pull you down even if you see whether you can jetpack across space to get from your frigate buddy to your freighter accidentally jump off. Which is a neat little effect I guess. Though, it makes me wonder what would happen if I were to do that in the middle of space, no where near a planet.

Third new thing is that once you get a little ways away from a large ship, your life-support gets drained really fast. Which I wasn’t really expecting! Luckily I had a stash of Life Support Gels and enough carbon and dihydrogen to make more when those ran out that I was able to keep myself alive as I fell onto the planet. I’m just gonna go out on a limb and assume my Exo-suit’s thermal mitigation is, somehow, powerful enough to deal with re-entry friction.

So yeah, that’s 3 new things I learned.

Immersion ideas

So this game is primarily about exploration and discovery so flying through space and landing on different planets is the core gameplay loop. I had a few suggestions to make that gameplay a little more spicy without overhauling anything.

  1. Animations: Little details like your guy actually climbing into the ship instead of teleporting into it, or fiddling with the ships instrument cluster when you thrust forward or switch weapons, or recharge shields or activate pulse drive etc. Think of the way your hands move in elite.

  2. Immersive menus: The way elite dangerous does them, you look at a panel and interact, that pulls up the specific menu you were looking for. Wanna open the galaxy map? Look at one of your ships many panels and it opens up a holographic galaxy map like the Idroid in MGSV, so it’s still useable, but a tad more immersive. Same thing can be done with hailing messages, or byte beats even switching to third person. I believe the term Is diagetic menus?

  3. Physical ships. So, instead of installing ship mods, or repairing your ship in a menu, you enter a sort of build mode go to the specific part of your ship that needs to be modified or repaired and make your additions. No more dragging things into an inventory slot. Actually get out and attach modules where you want them. They can even have their own hitboxes so they can get damaged and you’d have to fix them through that build mode and not an inventory menu.

I think that’s all I could come up with. What do you guys think? Any other immersive tweaks?

I'm trying to stay unspoiled but I gotta gush

So, I’m trying to stay unspoiled and slowly play through No Man’s Sky at my own pace for the first play through or so. I jump into a new system and start looking at the planets and see one labeled, “Cabled.” And I’m like, “Wat.” I just gotta go look. I’m thinking, “It’s really close to the star, maybe that has to do with it…?”

I swoop down and I instantly get goosebumps. WTF ARE THOSE?! The balls, the war of the world looking walker-ish things. So many ball looking things! I’m instantly getting flash backs to The Matrix and how the surface looked then. ARE THERE PEOPLE IN THOSE BALLS?!

I just fly along the surface, too scared to land. There’s little nodules on the sides of some of those balls, are they lasers? If I land, are they gonna cut my ship to ribbons?

Finally, it cuts over from night to day and I get up the courage to land. I’m terrified that I’m going to like, wake up the planet and the entire thing is going to blast me into smithereens for daring to land on the planet of the balls. However, I land without issue and quickly start scanning the balls. “Inorganic material” and “Plantlife” and I’m like… “Huh. Okay. Well, maybe that’s just a limitation of the game engine. It could still like, wake the giant war-of-the-worlds looking MFs if I poke one.”

Eventually, I do get up the courage to poke one. It’s at this point my relief washes over me as I’m not immediately incinerated. Just a funny looking rock as far as the game is concerned. Okay. Fair enough.

Though, now, in my head I’m inventing lore upon lore about how that world came to be. I still steer clear of it, just because it’s still creepy AF but it’s been a while since a game has triggered my imagination so hard that I legitimately felt fear.

I still wonder… Could that be a Korvax hive world? A world given over completely to computation and memory storage? When I mined that one ball, did I incinerate the stored memories of millions of Korvax? Did I kill digital Korvax babies?!

How awesome would it be if they had a chessboard that you could build at your base to play friends? I think any board game would be awesome really. Its great to visit friends, see their planets, and hang out in general… but what if we had somet…

Transferring NMS from PS4 To PS5

I have about 70 hours in NMS on my PS4 and I uploaded my latest progress to my PS5(but when I bought the PS5 version of the game, downloaded it and ran it, my file is not there.) Where is the file and how would I retrieve it on my PS5? I can’t stand the thought of starting from scratch(but I will if I have to.) Some input on this situation would be much appreciated.

Gardening is fun

This is my Stasis farm biologicals, a two minute run down the hall gives me enough to make almost 100 stasis devices at 15.6M units each. Couple that with my collection of S-class mines across 11 galaxies and you’ve got a moneymaking operation. …
