NMS HOT POST

Do-it-yourself new character challenges

As much as I like cruising around the galaxy with my fully kitted-out main character, I really like the beginning stages of the game. I guess it was partly because of doing the achievements and expeditions, but I got addicted to the first few days of game time when your resources and abilities are limited, and I tend to start new characters and level them until I got bored and delete them.

But lately I’ve been setting challenges for myself. It started simple; get to an S-class multitool, ship, and freigter. Okay, that was fun. Full explorer run, maxing out the Explorer’s Guild rep? Cool.

So then I started getting a little more elaborate.

Neural Assembly
You are a stranded alien life form who’s managed to weld themselves to a robotic body, and you’re desperate to re-connect to your people. Put the Ares head on an Autophage body and get to the living ship as fast as possible.

Octopus’ Garden
You are a grumpy octopoid being who just wants to be left alone to make things and get wealthy. Build a base that includes a fully functional production line making fusion ignitors and stasis cores, deep underwater. Wear the Iteration: Gemini head. Use the bubble trail.

My next one’s going to be fun.

Rebel Scum
You are a robot, and that makes you mad. Full-on Autophage run. Get a sentinel S-class ship, an S-class autophage staff or sentinel weapon, and a pirate frigate. Make a seriously badass autophage getup. Max out pirate reputation.

Does anyone else do these little self-created kind-of story-like expeditions? Any other suggestions?

That AtlasPass v3 door in space stations... [SPOILER]

OK, apologies if this is a worn topic; I’m fairly new to the game and still discovering things.

Early on when I was learning my way around space stations, I found that room off the side of the technology merchants’ area, with a little hallway leading to a locked door that said “AltasPass v3 Required”. My interest was piqued. I eventually found the recipe for an AtlasPass v3 and saw that it needed Emeril. So I looked up Emeril and found that it can only be found on planets around green stars, and that required a special update to my ship’s hyperdrive. Now I was really interested! Something that takes that much work must have an interesting reward, right?

So I eventually got my hyperdrive upgraded, visited a green star, found an Emeril deposit on a planet, and mined it. Crafted my pass, and I was good to go.

The next station I visited, I ran straight to that door, opened it, and… WTF? A hydroponics garden? That’s it?

I felt a bit like Ralphie in A Christmas Story when he finally decoded his Ovaltine message. Is that really all there is to this room? Does the AtlasPass v3 have other uses?

No complaints here, it pushed me to explore a little more which is part of the point of this game. I just thought it was a little weird to have to go to so much trouble for such a pointless room.

Just found out the Switch version lacks many features...

… And crashes a lot, and overheats the console. I knew the Switch was never gonna be the best place to get NMS, but I was very excited to finally own a copy, and I have no alternatives (no other consoles, not enough performance on my PC).

I was aware of the lack of multiplayer mode, and I accepted the idea to explore the game alone and never meet another player… But the deal breaker for me, the thing I discovered recently – and not many reviews care to mention, that’s why I didn’t know – is the lack of settlements. For me it’s a big deal, because I love science fiction and city building games, I was thrilled at the opportunity to manage a futuristic village on a planet of my choice… I also watched a lot of tutorials on how to glitch your base buildings into the settlements in preparation for when I’d find one.

But that will never happen, now I know. Now, I’m no game designer and as far my knowledge of programming goes, you could tell me “it’s magic” and I would believe it. But I see the Switch running stunning, fast paced and complex games with complex mechanics (from Bayonetta to Tears of the Kingdom and The Witcher 3) without ever crashing and very rarely glitching… why is there the need to cut a seemingly “easy” feature like settlements, of all things? I would expect more “taxing” features to be downgraded, such as the number of sentinels attacking all at once, the scenery spectacle during dogfights and the number of ships attacking you, etc., but those are all there – and that’s what usually crashes the game and/or overheats the console. I don’t get it. What else is missing from this version? Also, is there any chance we will get settlements on Switch? They said they wouldn’t give us capes, and eventually they did. Maybe there’s hope… Sorry for the long rant, I had to vent my frustration with the game, which I admittedly love nonetheless.
